Michael Wood began guitar lessons when he was 9 years old. Taught by local teacher John Byrne (formerly of The La's) Mike moved to Jersey in 1993 and was introduced to local guitarist Robert Ozard. Here he developed a passion for the Classical Guitar, and began earnest study. One year later, at just 14, Mike gave his first full length recital at the Jersey Art Centre. Following this recital Michael met Carlos Bonell (Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music in London) and was subsequently awarded a scholarship by the Dorothy Chapman Trust to study with him in London.
“almost unbelievable...Michael Wood fascinated us for almost an hour. Playing with a dedicated concentration during which you could have heard a pin drop” JERSEY EVENING POST
Michael has since taken Masterclasses with Gordon Crosskey, Craig Ogden, Edoardo Catemario and Amanda Cook and more recently has studied under Paul Gregory (winner of the International Segovia Prize). In 2008 he was awarded a diploma in Music Performance from the ABRSM, where his playing was described as “lilting and deeply felt…sincere…shows real affection for the music”
Michael has performed throughout the country, including performances at Brighton Live and Brighton Fringe Festivals, Lewes Guitar Festival, and The Big Session Festival. As well as Classical music, Michael enjoys playing Contemporary and Acoustic music - his playing has been featured on several albums by local musicians, most recently as part of his band "The Flews" and Cathryn Stone's latest album "White Sun Dark Moon"
“I was most impressed by his ability and facility…he has reached an impressive level of achievement in his playing” CARLOS BONELL, (Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music)
Mike has recently moved to Devon with his girlfriend Catherine and their cat, Jack. He is greatly in demand as a guitarist for all types of bookings including Wedding receptions, Business Functions, Dinner Parties and other social events.
